Feng Shui

The 4,000 year old Chinese art of placement, called Feng Shui, offers wonderful benefits to anyone in the healing arts. The two words mean “wind and water”. The ancient Chinese were in tune with nature. They noticed that it was made up of energy which they called, “chi”. The observance of this chi taught them what religions and philosophies later taught people: that life is made up of this “unseen life force energy”. Chinese called it chi; Japanese call it Ki; Hindus call it Prana; Christians call it the Holy Spirit.

Feng Shui is rooted in a philosophy called the TAO, which means “the way”. This was human beings’ connection with nature. In the TAO, came the concepts known as Yin and Yang, which is the balance of opposites. There is no real black and white as seen in the symbol but a connection of the two. For every night there is day and for every happy thought there is a negative one. This is what causes us to be in balance. Too much of any one thing creates imbalance. The true basis of Feng Shui is about creating balance, which leads to harmony in all areas of our lives.

Whether beginning a massage practice or continuing one, anytime is good to check out the Feng Shui of the space. Does it feel warm, wonderful, nurturing?  If the answer is yes, then so will your clients. Clients will remember the experience even if they cannot describe it and will continue to return and refer people to you.

In Feng shui it is not just placement of furniture that makes the difference but the reason why you have made the changes. There is energy in thought. One of the most famous metaphysicians of all time, Albert Einstein, once said, “ Nothing happens until something moves”. This includes your thoughts not just your furniture. Create a positive intention for you and your client for what you think about expands.

In working with many massage therapists in my practice, it is evident that all want to succeed at doing what they love. Working out of your home can be just as scary as working out of an office space. If things are flowing nicely in your surroundings you allow abundance to flow.
I had one great client who had a massage school not doing very well and was thinking of closing it. Feng shui was used as a possible solution. We did a few things and within a matter of a month things changed around dramatically so that she not only stayed, but grew her student body. She has sinced moved to a bigger location and has been prospering ever since.

Another massage client had her practice out of her apt. and wanted more revenue because she was thinking of leaving her job to do it full-time. After some Feng Shui, she had more clients, more money, and more recognition in a short period of time that she not only bought a new home, she has cut down her day job hours so that massage is her main source of income.

Feng Shui can be confusing to the beginner and going to a bookstore is helpful but can also be overwhelming. My suggestion is that you pick the book that resonates with you after you have opened the cover. Some Feng Shui authors are good at drawing you to the book with its “Feng Shui” design but their method may be different from what you read somewhere else.  Go to my article on "Which Philosophy To Choose".  Its on my website at same location you found this article.

Until you have studied with a qualified teacher or master its good to pick the book that you like, feel you understand, and agree with some of its ideas. If you were going to decorate your space, you might go to the decorator section and look at, Martha Stewart, Chris Madden, or Alexandria Stoddard (in my opinion she does Feng Shui). They would all offer you a perspective that you could use that would enhance your decorating. In this way, Feng Shui can be an approachable tool and not one that you feel you need years of study to grasp. If that is your mission by all means, study with a master and there are many in the U.S. now. The International Feng Shui Guild website is a good place to find them.  Go to: www.IFSG.org.

I would like to offer you some tips that I believe will be helpful to you in your practice of massage therapy as well as in your own life. Use what you feel comfortable or try some things out as an experiment. I once had a client who after I Feng Shui-ed his office, said he had a lot of new business and things were going great but he wasn’t sure the Feng Shui adjustments had anything to do with it. I said:” I know a way you can test it. Take away all the things you added to increase flow, put your furniture back the way it was, and see what happens”. He replied: ”No way!”

6 Keys to Increasing Prosperity in Your Massage Practice:
Remember prosperity is not just money but satisfied clients, harmony, and healing.

1) Make sure your room has a peaceful and warm color. Fleshtones, pinks, terracotta’s, even soft whites and beiges are fine. This creates an atmosphere that is nurturing for healing.

2) Make sure you are facing the door when working as often as possible and not with your back to the door or in line with the door. You need to be in your best energy and the other positions drain you.

3) Bring in something to increase flow but not too overpowering like a water fountain proportioned to the size of the room. WATER is a symbol for prosperity. Make sure the sound is peaceful and not loud.

4) Use soft lighting, candles, etc. or anything you like to create a warm atmosphere.

5) Have some greenery as this is healing in Feng Shui and is also good for money. If you are watering something like a plant you are growing your finances. Use artificial only if there is no light and make sure it looks real and is not too close to you. Use rounded leaves for harmony.

6) Hang a round-faceted crystal in the middle of the room to create balance
It also acts to ground the energy in the room.

These tips also include the 5 natural elements in nature: Fire, Wood, Metal, Water, Earth. When used in a space they bring about balance and harmony.

Finally, be sure to write some intentions for what things you would like to see happen in your practice and place them in a sacred place in your massage room. Once the energy begins to flow then it will go to the areas you have stated or intended. Emerson said:” The ancestor to every action is a thought”.

One of my earlierst teachers, Feng Shui Master, Professor Lin Yun, says, “if you go about your life doing the thing you do without Feng Shui you will only be 50% effective. If you do them with Feng Shui, then you have 100% results. Feng Shui with intentions, you can have 150% effectiveness."

Enjoy Feng Shui and all that it has to offer. In Feng Shui we know that we cannot change energy (its essence) but we can move it around.  So move your business to where you want it to go.
